Getting Started With Ancestry And The Family History Guide--Part 1

The Family History Guide
The Family History Guide Blog

Hi Everyone! I hope you have taken the opportunity to explore the Partner pages on The Family History Guide recently.

It is really wonderful to have a working knowledge of each of the big websites that offer an opportunity to create a family tree with them. The reason you would want to have more than one tree is that each website contain unique help and records. We want to see all the hints for the people we are searching for on our family lines. Learning how to to do this is made easier by following the step-by-step instructions in the Family History Guide.  It is a good idea to go to a side-by side view on your monitor as you work between The Family History Guide and your Ancestry account.

Today we'll take a look at the Ancestry (AN) Drop-down menu on the Homepage:  Project 1: Getting Stated, Goal 1: Choose an Ancestry Account. Here is your direct link to the page in the Family History Guide.

Choice A: Set up a Free Trail. This option is a 14-day free trial that will convert to a regular account at the end of that time period unless you choose to discontinue.

Choice B:  Using a GEDCOM file to populate your tree.

Choice C:  Create and LDS Account

Note that a Summary in the various sections allows you to choose what steps you need to take to accomplish what you need. There are lots of things being added to these pages during the Beta period. See What's New link or in the dropdown menu for the Homepage of The Family History Guide under More.  I like to give you a link and the path to it so you have two ways of finding it.  The more you go to the Family History Guide the quicker you will learn right where things are.  But sometimes a link is more expedient.

For those of us that already have an Ancestry account, I thought it would be fun to ask you to add your favorite thing about Ancestry to share in the comments with those in our group that might be thinking about creating an Ancestry Account.

My favorite thing is that once I find a record on Ancestry for my relative, Ancestry posts all the other records they find on that person right there in the sidebar as Suggested Records. I find it to be pretty accurate and often times I can find all I need to source a life with vital records right there.
If you click on the question mark right near the list they provide, Ancestry tells you how they gather these suggestions for you.

"How we find suggestions for you:
Using the information from this record transcription, Ancestry searches for other records that may be related to the same person. The suggestions system also looks at people in trees to which this record has been saved to see if there are additional records saved to those people. These records are displayed here to aid you in finding other records that may help you in your research." Ancestry.com

Note:  When something is gathered from an Ancestry Tree that is not always reliable source. It is only an opinion until it has a record that can be cited.  Otherwise consider it a clue to be researched by you!
Tomorrow I will write about the Goal 2: Customize your profile and site settings.
So what is Your favorite feature on Ancestry?
